Spectramast DC™- Spectramast DC™ is the newest product on the market and contains an active ingredient that is effective against many of the mastitis pathogen that a cow may be exposed to or potentially be chronically infected with at dry off. Spectramast DC™ is the most expensive on a per tube basis, but also offers the flexibility of having a zero hour milk withhold as well as the shortest meat withhold (16 days) of any of the tubes. This offers the highest degree in management flexibility and lowest residue risk available to dairies.
Tomorrow™- Tomorrow is in the same drug class as Spectramast DC™ and has very good action against many of the major mastitis pathogens. Tomorrow is moderately priced on a per cow or per tube basis, but lacks the flexibility having a 72 hour milk withhold and the longest meat withhold of any dry tube that is not named Quartermaster™, at a 42 day meat withhold. Practically speaking, since most dry periods are 45 days or longer, the post calving slaughter withhold with this product for normal length dry periods is recommended to be at least 4 days.
Albadry Plus™- Albadry Plus™ has two different antibiotics with two separate methods of action against bacteria. Albadry should work well on many types of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus mastitis. Like the other second tier products, Albadry Plus™ would not be expected to perform well on any gram negative pathogens such as E. Coli or Klebsiellas that a cow could be exposed to immediately post dry-off. Albadry Plus™ is reasonably priced and requires a 72 hour milk withhold and a 30 day meat withhold.
DryClox™- DryClox™ is a single antibiotic preparation that is in the penicillin family but has action against some of the bacteria that have developed resistance to traditional Penicillin G. DryClox™ is labeled for treating Staphylococcus Aureus and Streptococcus Agalactiae mastitis and would be expected to work on several other Staphs and Streps that cause mastitis. DryClox™ is reasonably priced, has a zero hour milk withhold for dry periods longer than 30 days and a 30 day meat withhold from the day of treatment
Orbenin DC™- Orbenin DC™ uses the same active ingredient as DryClox™ and has a very similar spectrum of bacteria it would be expected to be effective on. Orbenin DC™ is reasonably priced per tube or per cow and offers a zero hour milk withhold for dry periods longer than 28 days and a shorter 28 day meat withhold.
Teat Sealants are an excellent means of minimizing the risk of new infections from environmental sources during the dry period and a great addition to any of these dry cow therapy choices. Cleanliness is the key when using these products as it is easy to seal bacteria into the teat and quarter. The tube is sized for a large teat so squeeze tightly at the teat base and only inject until there is a small amount of back pressure. Remove the tube from the teat first and then release your fingers slowly from the base of the teat. The entire tube may not be needed, especially on short teated heifers.
